Originally a Roman Military Outpost, Leicester’s early settlement, which was better known as Ratae Cariettaiuvorum, developed along the banks of the River Soar and boarded the national forest, which often came useful in protection. Leicester flourished into a successful roman market town, with evidence of roman pavements and baths still existing in the city today.

Leicester gained its city status in 1919 and over the decades has moved away from the market town image to an industrial specialist in Textiles, Footwear and Hosiery. With a population in excess of 285,000, there is no storage in entertainment, services or cultural experiences within this thriving city.

Historians will not be disappointed with the city’s abundance of Roman ruins, majestic castles, historical events and Haunted properties. Take a trip to the Jewry Wall Museum or a guided tour around the Castle Park or discover the old town centre of Leicester, where you will find the Medieval Guildhall and Leicester’s Castle and its Great Hall.

Out in the battlefields of Bosworth, is a Visitor Centre where you can discover all you need to know about the battle of Bosworth, which was known to claim the life of the King of England, Richard III.

Leicester is also home to some splendid properties, such as Stanford Hall Stately Home, Belvoir Castle and a Jousting Festival, which is held annually at the Belvoir and Rockingham Castle. Children will also enjoy nearby by theme parks, such as Twinlakes Park, Snibston Discovery Park, Wilstow Maze, Conkers and the famous Twycross Zoo, a fantastic day out for all the family.

Leicester isn’t just about history; the recently opened National Space Centre back in 2001 is one of the most popular and visited tourist attraction in the county, educating its visitors on the space travel, cosmology, space science and astronomy. If leisure travel is more your thing, the Grand Union Canal ways offer daily boat trips or travel back to the day of steam trains at the Great Central Railway Station. Leicester is also in commuting distance to East midlands airport and Birmingham International, making flying an easy option.

Home to the famous premiership rugby union team, Leicester Tigers, catch them playing at Welford Road or if you prefer to watch football, Leicester City Football Club based at the walker stadium maybe more for you. Sporting doesn’t stop there, if you head to Donington Park, the home to the largest collection of Formula One cars in the world, there are lots of opportunities to watch all sorts of motor racing and well as the opportunity to join in and experience racing for yourself.

Education is another one of Leicester’s selling points, as it is home to three highly regarded universities, such as Loughborough University, University of Leicester and De Montfort University. There is also no storage of primary and secondary schools with over 200 in the city alone.
